Celebrate New Mexico Traditions during Jemez Historic Site’s annual holiday event, Lights of Gisewa in Jemez Springs, 5-9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14. The remains of Gisewa Pueblo and San José de los Jemez Mission will be decorated with hundreds of farolitos illuminating the site and creating a beautiful path for visitors to stroll along while also enjoying music and dance performances.

High elevation lakes will likely soon freeze over and be hard to access due to snow. Lakes that usually freeze over and offer ice fishing include Eagle Nest, Lake Maloya, Lake Alice, Fenton Lake and sometimes Heron Lake. This usually happens in December.
This time of year it’s always a good idea to call ahead to check on conditions.
Navajo Lake does not freeze over and remains open all winter. The San Juan River below Navajo Dam has excellent winter fishing and a little bit more elbow room during this time of year.

The Pre-Competitive LAFC Girls Soccer team finished the season strong at the Socctoberfest Tournament held over Halloween weekend in Farmington! Thomas McLaughlin, 81, passed away peacefully in his home in the arms of his son, Patrick, on Wednesday November 13, 2024, after a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

BLM To Begin Selling Christmas Tree Permits In New Mexico
SANTA FE – Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices will begin selling personal Christmas tree permits for harvest of piñon and juniper.
Permits will be available beginning Nov. 20 for the Farmington and Taos Field Offices and New Mexico State Office, Nov. 29 for the Socorro Field Office and Dec. 2 for the Rio Puerco Field Office.
The permits must be purchased before Dec. 24. The cost per tree is $5. Permits and maps may be obtained over the counter at your local BLM Office or online for some locations at forestproducts.blm.gov.

Shirley was born in Blaine, Washington to George and Lillian Brandt amid the great depression. They relocated to Bellingham shortly after. Her parents had come from very humble circumstances and through hard work managed to achieve a middle-class life. Her father George “Turk” was a fisherman and the first boat he built was the “Shirley B” when she was a toddler. Bigger and better boats would follow but this was the foundation of what would become a solid and successful career. Last seen, the Shirley B was still afloat 70 years later.

JEMEZ SPRINGS – The National Park Service will resume the collection of park entrance fees at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) beginning Jan. 1, 2025.
VCNP will be able to retain 100 percent of the fees collected in the park for use on projects that directly benefit park visitors, including road, trail and trailhead improvements.
